About Newhaven

The Port of Newhaven is a small port located at the mouth of the River Ouse in East Sussex near the historic towns of Seaford, Peacehaven and Lewes.

Newhaven is a car ferry port for services across the English Channel to Dieppe en Le Havre in Normandy, France. The port handles both industrial and passenger traffic. There is also a small marina.

Newhaven has been a harbour ever since the 19th century, when the river Ouse still used to flow through Seaford. Unfortunately, the flow of the river stopped when there was a storm in the early 19th century. To solve this problem, engineers performed 'the cut' at what is now known as Newhaven. They cut a channel down to what is now Newhaven Harbour. Newhaven was joined up with the river further inland than Seaford. This meant that Newhaven then prospered as a harbour town.

The Harbour Arm at Newhaven was added later on when people from the Channel Islands migrated to Newhaven, and built this Arm.

The harbour was very useful during the first and second World Wars, as it was the fastest way to reach Dieppe (France). At this time the town benefited greatly from the Navy being at Newhaven.

Today, the harbour's main function is as a commercial port with ferry links to Dieppe and Le Havre in France.

A visitor attraction in Newhaven is the huge Newhaven Fort, built on Castle Hill in the 1860s, It is the last of several built here since Bronze Age times.

Please note: foot passengers now need to check in at the car terminal (NEWHAVEN TOWN STATION).

Getting There

By Car
Newhaven is located between Brighton & Eastbourne on the A259 Coast Road, or by following the main A27 & heading South at Beddingham along the A26. Once in Newhaven follow the signs to the Ferry Port.
From London take the M25, M23, A23, then A26 into Newhaven and follow the signs to the Ferry Port.

By Coach/Rail
Regular buses (operated by South Coast Buses / Brighton & Hove) arrive and depart daily from Brighton, Peacehaven, Seaford, Bexhill, Folkestone, Dover, Rye and Hastings. National Express coaches operate services to and from Newhaven.
You can travel by rail to and from Newhaven Harbour Train station which offers a regular train service. Southern Trains operate services from Seaford, Lewes/Brighton. National services run frequently between London and Newhaven mostly with at least one change.

Car Parking is available for short and long term use.
